Philips Sonicare HX9171/20 Review

0

The HX9171/20 is an advanced electric toothbrush that has something most don’t offer: a sanitizer. And to say that this is an advanced toothbrush would be an understatement. This is more of a high-end electric toothbrush, but it’s in the top of its class and offers everything from a three-week battery life to an adaptive brush head that automatically alerts you to adjust the pressure of the brush to ensure gentle cleaning.

Able to remove up to 10 times more plaque than a manual toothbrush, this model can outperform even most dental cleanings.

It’s near perfect, but we did find a few things you need to know before making your purchase.

Sale Price:£222.30

Pros

  • Built-in sanitizer for true cleaning (more on that soon)
  • Three brushing modes and three intensity modes
  • Three-week battery life

Cons

  • Very loud operation
  • Expensive with costly replacement heads

The replacement heads are expensive, but this seems to be the norm in the industry. The one thing that did catch me by surprise was that this toothbrush is very loud during operation. In fact, it may be the loudest electric toothbrush we’ve ever tried, but it also provides a cleaning we’ve never experienced before.

Philips Sonicare HX9171/20 Review

When you open up your toothbrush for the first time, it’s recommended that you charge it to full capacity. This will ensure that your toothbrush’s battery is fully charged for your first usage and is said to increase the battery life, too.

In total, it took me 16 hours to charge the unit for the first time.

But don’t worry: the battery stays charged for 3 weeks. When using this toothbrush, you’ll remove ten times the amount of plaque with virtually no effort. An adaptive brush head includes pressure-sensing technology to alert you when you’re brushing too hard.

If you brush too hard, you can damage the enamel of your teeth.

Before diving right in, you’ll be able to choose between three intensity modes (perfect for users with sensitive teeth), and there are three cleaning modes available:

  • Clean
  • White
  • Deep clean

I haven’t used deep clean as often as clean or whitening, but it does help to lift stains even further and is a little more “rough” because it has an increased duration. A quadpacer ensures you brush each of the four quadrants in the mouth for the dentist-recommended 30 seconds each.

And when you’re in the deep clean mode, you’ll be brushing for three minutes rather than two minutes.

Removing up to ten times more plaque, your dentist will be shocked to see just how clean your teeth and gums are during your need dental visit. And you’ll notice just how many more stains are removed from your teeth as a result of using the whitening mode.

In two weeks, I noticed that my teeth were visibly whiter, which is always something to smile about.

And finally, when you go to put your toothbrush in the charger, UV rays will sanitize the brush head to kill off any bacteria and germs that may be left behind on the bristles. For me, this is a guarantee that your toothbrush is clean every time it touches your teeth.
